Sawshark Shark Photos - An Unusual Shark With a Long Saw-like Snout

Top Right Solid Corner

Sawsharks, or saw sharks, Pristiophoriformes, have long blade-like snouts edged with teeth, which they use to slash and disable their prey. There are five described, and some undescribed species that have been observed. These include the longnose sawshark, Pristiophorus cirratus; the Japanese sawshark, Pristiophorus japonicus; and the Bahamas sawshark, Pristiophorus schroederi. Most species occur in waters from South Africa to Australia and Japan. Although they are similar in appearance to sawfish, there are some distinctions. A major differences is the color on the sawshark's back. It is brown where the color of the sawfish's back is a light blue. Also the sawshark has two long barbels out of the middle of its saw. Sawsharks can reach up to almost 6 feet in length. Some have five gill slits, while others have six gill slits. Sawsharks eat fish, shrimp, crustaceans and squid. They swim close to the bottom of the ocean using the barbells and ampullae of Lorenzini to find their prey, then use their long serrated saw to kill and shred their prey before eating it. They are fished commercially for their flesh. In Japan, sawshark is one of the many fish processed into fishcake called kamaboko.
