The spotted seal, Phoca largha, sometimes called the larga seal, lives on the ice and along the coasts of the north Pacific Ocean, the Bering Sea and the Sea of Okhotsk. It is a medium-sized seal and has a gray or silvery gray coat, and the adults are spotted. They have no external ears, only ear openings, and they have dog-like snouts. It is their blubber more so than their fur that keeps them warm in the icy seas. They are hunted on a subsistence basis by native tribes, who make use of the seal's meat, blubber and fur. They are not currently considered endangered, but climate change will likely impact them, as the ice floes they use to rest on are rapidly shrinking.

Spotted seals are roughly the same size as harbor seals and ribbon seals. The largest specimens may weigh 270 pounds and grow to a length of five to six feet. Average longevity of the spotted seal is 25 years, with a maximum life span of 35 years. They reach sexual maturity at the age of four, and pairs are monogamous for the length of a breeding season. Pups are born in April and May, and start learning to feed themselves in six weeks. Unsuccessful starving pups are often found on beaches in May and June. There is a breeding colony of spotted seals in China, called the Dalian Seal Sanctuary at Liaodong Bay.

Spotted seals can often be found hauled out on ice or land in aggregations of several thousand animals, but individuals have been spotted in the open ocean hundreds of miles from shore. They feed on schooling fish, but their prey varies by season and location. Prey includes herring, cod, capelin, sand lance, salmon, pollock, flatfish, octopus and shrimp. They often feed near the sea bottom. Spotted seals in turn are preyed upon by killer whales, sharks, Steller sea lions, polar bears, and brown bears. Pups may be taken from shore by wolves and foxes, and even by large seabirds.

Spotted seals are listed as Data Deficient by the IUCN Red List. They are not considered endangered at this time, but current numbers are unknown, as there have been few recent studies of this species. Their numbers are predicted to decline as sea ice continues to disappear.
