The Azure Vase Sponge, Callyspongia plicifera, is one of the most colorful sponges in the world. Shaped like a vase, with many grooves and pits on the outside, it grows to 18 inches tall. It inhabits coral reefs in the Caribbean, Bahamas, and Florida. Usually solitary but occasionally can be found with side tubes. It ranges in color from pink to purple to fluorescent light blue.

Sponges come in many different types of colors, shapes and sizes, and estimates say there are more than 5,000 species of sponges. Sponges are invertebrates - that means they do not have a backbone. Over 95% of the animals in the world are invertebrates. Sponges can found in both freshwater and saltwater. Sponges are a very simple animal and are an aggregation of cells. Sponges are very different from coral which is an aggregation of the limestone outer skeletons of polyps. Sponges lack a true tissue and organs. Predators do not eat them because they lack nutrition. There are also glass like shards called spicules found in their body making them unpalatable. Sponges are suspension feeders, eating food particles suspended in water. Sponges circulate water through their body to absorb food particles by filtration. They are members of the phylum Porifera and some people refer to sponges as poriferans.

The most famous of all sponges is Sponge Bob Square Pants. Sponge Bob and Patrick, a sea star, are featured inan animated television series on the Nickelodeon Channel. It was named one of the greatest television shows of all time by TIME Magazine. Sponge Bob is the main character and he is based upon a sea sponge, but as you can see from our pictures he looks a lot more like a kitchen sponge than the live ocean sponges below.
